Aftercare is just as important as the quality of the piercing. Following the aftercare instructions is essential to the healing process and I cannot guarantee a successfully healed piercing if you do not actively follow the aftercare during the entire healing process.

⟡ CLEAN your piercing twice a day with a sterile saline spray. We normally have one available at the shop for purchase, but you can find some at a local drugstore if you prefer. Personally, I don’t mind which one you use as long as you get the right stuff. We sell H2Ocean, but other brands include NeilMed, Steri-wash, and a variety of wound wash sprays. Your sterile saline spray should only contain purified water and 0.9% sodium chloride. We DO NOT recommend putting ANYTHING else on your piercing, including alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Bactine, Neosporin, witch hazel, tea tree oil, or any other ointments, creams, or lotions, etc. I recommend folding a piece of a paper towel into a corner if you need to “scrub” around the piercing area because washcloths and Q-tips can easily get caught and cause little fibers to build up around the piercing.

⟡ DO NOT TOUCH OR TWIST your piercing! The more you play with your piercing, the more likely it is going to get irritated and have a hard time with healing. You can also cause piercing bumps by messing with your piercing and they can be very stubborn and hard to make go away. You can also damage the tissue by messing with your piercing, even if you think it’s healing well. Try not to do anything to make your healing times longer!

⟡ AVOID CONSTANT PRESSURE on your piercing! If you received a piercing on the side that you sleep on, consider getting a piercing pillow to lessen the soreness and chance of migrating or shifting. Once the piercing has shifted at an angle because it has been slept on, there is no fixing it so make sure you’re cautious! Downsizing can also REALLY help your piercing heal, and is another essential part to the healing process. Other things that can add constant pressure is any masks, headbands, glasses, headsets, etc. so be cautious when using these items to prevent any constant pressure.

⟡ DOWNSIZE your piercing jewelry on time! Usually a good time frame is 4-6 weeks from the day that you got pierced, but try not to wait TOO long. As soon as the swelling has subsided you should come in for the shorter post. I obviously cannot force you to do anything but there is no point in getting a piercing if you are not going to take care of it. Downsizing means that you will get the shorter post for your piercing for all of the piercings done with a STRAIGHT piece of jewelry, whether it is a flat back or a straight barbell. When you get the shorter post, it will prevent it from shifting when being slept on and will prevent any excessive snagging or pulling on the jewelry which is naturally more common while the jewelry is long. We cannot start with shorter jewelry because if your body does not have enough room to swell for the piercing, your piercing can become irritated and painful, and at worst your skin can grow over the piercing which can be extremely painful to remove. If you come into Inksomnia for downsizing, it is $15 for one of our piercers to do it for you + $15 per post. If the skin around your piercing is still puffy, it is okay to give it more time. If you are unsure, you can always stop by and check with one of our piercing professionals.

⟡ DO NOT REMOVE the jewelry from the piercing because it can be very challenging for you to put it back in. If you feel like you are unable to clean your piercing effectively, you are welcome to come in any time and I will clean it for you so you can start fresh with your aftercare. Piercings get crusty and some areas are harder to clean than others. Ultimately, I want you to have a happy and healthy piercing that you will love. As of right now, I do not charge to clean any piercings or jewelry. If your jewelry accidentally comes out while healing, it is best to stop by to have one of us put it back in for you. If you keep poking around in the wrong spot, you can make your piercing swollen and sore, which will make putting it back in harder for both of us. Normally we can get something back in if it has fallen out and has been out for 4-5 days, but it truly depends on each person.

⟡ PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE and try to change out your pillowcases and bedsheets regularly, as well as having clean hair around your healing piercings if they are on your ears. I cannot stress this enough, but if you have allergies during a certain time, please wait until allergy season is over before getting your nose pierced.

⟡ EAT WELL AND CONSIDER YOUR MEDICATION. Staying hydrated and having a well balanced diet with enough protein can really improve the rate that your body heals. Sometimes, certain medications can negatively affect the healing process such as Accutane, which actually recommends that you wait 6 months after you are done with it before getting a new piercing. If you take any sort of blood thinning medication, I would consult your doctor before poking a hole in your body.
